| ROSIE'S
CHOICE
Rosie
could not cope with her mother's passing. Everyone said time
would heal her pain but Rosie knew with certainty that each
day without her beloved parent would be blacker and darker than
the day before. She felt unwilling to keep going without her
Mama even though Rosie was herself a mother to three beautiful
young women and wife to a man who loved her more than anything
on earth. Rosie's pain became tunnel visioned and she found
each day there was only one thought in her mind...to find her
mother again. "Where are you, Mama,?" Rosie would cry in her
sleep. "How can I go on without you"? she asked as she stared
out the front picture window. Suddenly an answer came to her,
an instant solution to the grief and the huge loss that was
overwhelming her. Rosie stood up and walked like one sleeping
to the side door that led to the garage. She slid into the blue
pontiac and pressed the garage door opener. The car purred as
Rosie backed out of the driveway and a plan began to form in
her mind. "I will not hurt anyone," she promised herself as
she sped up the road that led to Ethe parkway. The car hugged
the road as she manoeuvred each curve and still Rosie continued
to press the accelerator. "Faster," she thought. There was a
huge oak tree on the right side of the road. No children played
in the park because school had not let out for the day yet.
"I only need to turn the wheel slightly...I won't hurt anyone
but myself...I will see Mama again"... The sound of the car
smacking into the unmoveable oak echoed through the valley.
In minutes people began to arrive at the accident scene. Someone
called the ambulance from her cell phone and others peered into
the upside down car to see if the woman was alive. She appeared
lifeless and blood covered her forehead, knees and the front
of her summer dress. Rosie was crumpled up like a rag doll,
lifeless and still. Fire fighters carefully pulled her out and
laid her on the stretcher while one of the medical team performed
mouth to mouth recisitation. A short time later, she was pronounced
dead. Rosie watched them work over her earthly body and felt
absolutely nothing. Rosie knew that she could not stay here
long because she was on a mission to find her mother. Rosie
saw the circle of light and began to move effortlessly into
the tunnel toward the sounds of singing and above the songs
she could hear her mother's voice. "Rosie, my Rosie, come to
Mama". Rosie saw her mother and the vision of her was awesome.
She was dressed in white and her wings shimmered in the light
cast by her form. Rosie hurried toward the angel but became
distracted by other sounds. She heard the ambulance screaming
and she heard the crowd noise as people waited and whispered.
Then, Rosie heard a plaintive wail...the sound of her eldest
daughter who had come along the same road only moments after
the accident. Natalie was on her knees, her arms around the
lifeless body that once was Rosie and she cried over and over
again, "Oh, please Mama, please don't leave me! I need you so
much. We all need you. Please, don't go"! The peace and serenity
that Rosie had begun to feel was shattered like the broken glass
of her windshield. Rosie knew that she was so connected to the
spirit of her mother that she simply could not heed the call
of her daughter. This was Rosie's truth at that instant. Rosie
could feel her mother's arms around her, the comfort she had
longed for during the past months. She heard the angel whisper
and it sounded like her mother speaking quietly in her ear.
"Dearest Rosie, how I love you. I have been your guardian angel
since I left you. I long to be with you again but know this.
Once you leave your world, you will be with me for all eternity,
my dear. Listen to the voice of your daughter who needs you
even more than you need me. You can become her earth angel.
You must choose, my sweet child, but choose wisely". Rosie trembled
as she stood halfway to heaven and she looked both ways. She
could see her mother in the distant light and could be with
her in a second. She could also see her eldest daughter crying
out to her to stay, the young woman's face shattered. Rosie
looked toward her mother once more and realized that the distance
between them had grown larger and her voice was like a whisper.
Rosie felt herself drawn back into the lifeless body that was
once her and as she slipped inside, she felt the arms of her
Natalie holding her close. Rosie moaned. Natalie shrieked to
the paramedics to come quickly. Rosie opened her eyes and for
one instant connected with her daughter and knew that she had
made the right decision. "I'll be alright now, my dear Mama.
Wait a little while longer for me! There is some living and
some loving that has to be done right here before I can come
home to you. The ambulance raced to Grace Hospital where intricate
surgery was performed by the surgeons. Rosie's entire family
gathered in the waiting room holding and loving one another.
Hours later a doctor appeared and smiled at the girls and their
father. "Would you like to see your mother now? She is going
to be just fine."
